U.S. Federal and State Income Taxes

The staff in the Office of Global Engagement are not professional tax advisers and will not be able to help you file your yearly federal and Georgia state taxes if you are employed during your time at LaGrange College.

Taxes will be withheld from your paycheck and at the end of January, your employer will send you a W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement) which tells you your yearly income and how much tax was withheld.  You will need to send a copy of this form in when you file your tax form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.

The Office of Global Engagement offers two ways for you to file your yearly income taxes:
  • This office has arranged for a tax accountant who specializes in international tax treaties and deductions for international students to complete your federal and state taxes for a fee.  Please contact the Office of Global Engagement for further information.
  • You can complete your federal and state taxes on your own by filing through an online program called Sprintax.  This program charges a fee for filing your U.S. and Georgia state taxes and tax form 8843.
All international students, whether employed or not, are required to complete tax form 8843. The Office of Global Engagement will provide a mailing envelope, a copy of the form, and instructions on how to complete it by late February, early March. Please keep track of how many days you are in the U.S. during the calendar year because this information is required to complete the form.

All tax forms need to be completed and postmarked by April 15.
